How Many Hours Should You Sleep Each Night

According to the Mayo Clinic, the amount of sleep you need depends on multiple factors, especially one’s age.

Infants generally need 12 – 16 hours per night. One- and two-year-old’s need 11 -14. Three- to five-year-old’s need 10 – 13. Six- to twelve-year-old’s need 9 -12. Thirteen- to eighteen-year-olds need 8-10 and adults need 7 or more.

Other factors that may affect how many hours you sleep each night include: sleep quality, previous sleep deprivation, pregnancy and aging.

For kids, regularly getting the recommended amount of sleep is linked with better physical and emotional health and a better quality of life.

For adults, getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night can lead to a variety of health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and even depression.

For optimum health, no matter the age, it is vital to get the recommended amount of sleep each night.
